Conference Call on HIV-related Travel and Immigration - August 19, 2008

Save the Date:
Conference Call on HIV-related Travel and Immigration

International Rectal Microbicides Advocates (IRMA) and Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) invite you to join an international conference call on August 19th, 11:00 am Eastern

Dear friends, advocates and activists,

The fight against discriminatory HIV-related travel and immigration restrictions is gaining momentum worldwide, and the United States remains a hold-out with its policies.

At the recent United Nations High Level Meeting on AIDS, almost all of the opening plenary speakers called for repeal of such policies, civil society rolled out a letter writing campaign to permanent missions, and experts in law, public health and human rights along with those affected by these restrictions held a side meeting to share information and strategize (side meeting materials now available on-line here.)

IRMA and GMHC invite you to join a conference call on August 19th, 11:00 am to learn:

  • the latest news on U.S. restrictions;
  • what U.S. policies may mean for the conference on microbicides in Pittsburgh in 2010, and
  • how to effectively participate in international efforts to repeal similar restrictions worldwide.

Speakers to include:

Please save the date, and we will send out the call-in number in early August.

*** Among next steps to overturn the U.S. bar and to support the global efforts, GMHC will host Undermining Public Health and Human Rights: the United States' HIV Immigration and Travel Ban, a satellite session during the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City on Sunday, August 3, 2008 from 11:15 am – 1:15 pm. See flier below. When we are all back from Mexico, we will carry advocacy further here at home.
