Will it be called ‘Recto-prevent’ … or Backdoor Butter? Will it be stigmatized, or celebrated as a way to have great sex while lowering the risk of infection?

Reporting live from the hallowed halls of the University of Oxford was never more exciting than last week, when Jerry Gallea of the UCLA Programme in Global Health and the International Rectal Microbicide Advocates (IRMA) talked about the frontiers (or should that be ‘rear-iers’) of HIV prevention: the search for an effective rectal microbicide.

His visit was hosted by Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention (CEBI) in the Department of Social Policy and Social Work, and featured the facts about who’s having anal sex around the world (news flash: not just gay men), and the slippery subject of how to have your anal play and stay safe, too.

Read the whole item.

Spectacular 7 - Meet IRMA Steering Committee members who are leading the way

“Research ends up on dusty tables without advocacy,” says Lanre Onigbogi. "A safe and effective lube seems like a no-brainer to protect people who enjoy anal sex," says Ken Mayer.
Read more about Lanre and Ken, and five IRMA Steering Committee members on the IRMA website, here.

FRESH Rectal Microbicide Advocate profiles (posted September 12) include Bridget Haire of Sydney, Australia; Rick Jones of Amsterdam, Netherlands; Ken Mayer of Boston, USA; Lourence “Larry” Misedah of Nairobi, Kenya; Kate Morrow of Providence, RI, USA; Lanre Onigbogi of Ibadan, Nigeria and Roy Wadia of Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Who is completing their PhD in bioethics? Who used to work for CNN? Who was the Principal Investigator of the first human trial of Tenofovir gel? You'll have to read to find out! IRMA couldn't be more proud to have these wonderful folks as our leaders. Click here to check out the rest of the SC members - 23 in all and representing 10 countries.

IRMA Announces New Steering Committee Members

Push for greater investment, portfolio diversity, global plan

International Rectal Microbicide Advocates
(IRMA) is delighted to announce the final selection of 13 new members to our international advocacy network’s Steering Committee (SC). An exhaustive process over several months brought in a total of 24 superlative applicants, and after a thorough evaluation, the Nominations Committee highly recommended 13 individuals to join.

“We were both thrilled and humbled by the very high quality of the applications we received for the Steering Committee,” said Marc-André LeBlanc, IRMA Secretary. “With limited space, this made the work of the Nominations Committee quite challenging. As it is, the group recommended more individuals than we had planned for – so we expanded the SC to accommodate.”

With the new members, the IRMA SC is now comprised of 23 individuals from 11 countries on six continents. The group is charged with providing strategic advice, expert guidance and scientific leadership for IRMA’s advocacy objectives, including the call for greater investment in rectal microbicide research, development and advocacy activities, a diversification of funders in the rectal microbicide portfolio, and the articulation of a Global Rectal Microbicide Development Plan.

“The honeymoon for the new SC is going to be sweet, but very short. IRMA has a lot of work to do to fight the stigma and denial surrounding anal sex practices the world over as well as advocate for expanded new prevention technology resources that will provide adequate funding to the underfunded rectal microbicide field,” said IRMA Chair Jim Pickett.

“Being that anal intercourse is a common behavior among heterosexual men and women, gay men, and other men who have sex with men globally, and since unprotected anal intercourse is 5 to 80 times more likely to result in HIV transmission compared to unprotected vaginal intercourse, it is imperative we develop safe, effective and acceptable rectal microbicides for women and men,” Pickett continued.

A New Steering Committee for IRMA

As IRMA members know, our growing network of advocates, scientists, policy makers and funders (more than 800 individuals at last count) has been engaged in a process seeking applicants to join our Steering Committee (SC). Several people are stepping down after exemplary service, and we decided to expand the SC to 20 seats.

See our Terms of Reference for more info on the SC (yes, the document needs to be updated --- a project for 2009!)

Monday, December 8 was the deadline for applications/nominations - and we are delighted to announce that 24 people have applied for the 10 open positions.

The applicant pool is diverse in microbicide research and advocacy expertise, professional and personal backgrounds, gender, sexuality, HIV status and geography - we have folks from Rwanda, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, India, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Peru, and the United States who have asked to be considered.

One thing each had in common - the skills, knowledge, energy, passion and commitment to advocate on behalf of the millions of men and women who engage in anal intercourse and need prevention options that go beyond latex.

Our next steps are as follows:

Over the next month, a nominations committee will be reviewing all the applicants and looking to see how they, in addition to the SC members who are staying on, fulfill the qualities IRMA is looking for to take our rectal microbicide advocacy efforts to the next level in 2009 and beyond.

Our goal is to announce new members of the SC in the month of January --- and then get down to business! We have a lot to do!

Stay tuned! For any questions on the process, contact us.
